Jendian is an associate professor of sociology and founding director of Fresno State’s American Humanics (AH) Program, which engages students in community service and prepares them for careers in nonprofit management and leadership.

The American Humanics Program has provided hundreds of Fresno State students with experience and training with community organizations. The students, in turn, provide more than 5,000 hours of service to the community each year. Since its onset in 2001, the program has graduated 60 students with National AH Certification. Most are employed in nonprofit and public service positions and about 75 percent of them work locally.

Jendian was elected chair of the national American Humanics Directors Association for 2008. The Fresno State AH Program recently won the Excellence in Community Relations and Civic Engagement Award at the American Humanics Management Institute, marking the fourth year in a row that the university’s program received a national award.

In 2006, Jendian received two university-wide faculty honors: the Spirit of Service Award, “recognizing his exemplary commitment to community engagement," and the Outstanding Advisor Award.

Jendian is being recognized by Temple Beth Israel as an active campaigner for social justice in many areas of the community, including the work he has done to increase the availability of affordable housing. He is a board member for several nonprofit organizations, including Academy for Civic and Entrepreneurial Leadership (a charter high school), Fresno Nonprofit Advancement Council, Relational Culture Institute, Fresno Housing Alliance and American Humanics, Inc.

Tickets for the banquet are $25 each ($30 the day of the event) or $175 for a table of eight and may be reserved by calling the Temple office at 432-3600.
