Chestnut Avenue, from Shaw to Bullard avenues, east of Fresno State, reopened Friday, April 25, for through traffic.

Temporary traffic control will be in place due to work yet to completed at intersections of Shaw/Chestnut and Bullard/Chestnut that includes new traffic signal poles and equipment.

A new roundabout at the intersection of Barstow and Chestnut avenues is fully functioning for both north-south and east-west movements. Campus traffic officials urge drivers of cars and bicycles, as well as pedestrians, to slow down and exercise caution in approaching the new roundabout and when moving through it. There is also a roundabout at Bulldog Lane adjacent to the entry to the Save Mart Center’s North Lot.

This new section of roadway was made possible through a $4.6 million grant from the state’s Traffic Congestion Relief Program. Chestnut Avenue was widened to four lanes from Shaw to Barstow and three lanes from Barstow to Bullard.

The project also included a new parking lot for Fresno State’s Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market at Chestnut and Barstow, as well as many other utility infrastructure improvements for both the campus and the city.

The project was done in conjunction with the City of Fresno and the Campus Pointe development team.
