Commencement guests may want to explore the campus

Parents and other guests of graduates who come to Fresno State for convocations on Friday, May 16, and Commencement on Saturday, May 17, may wish to explore the campus. Here are ideas for several things to see and do.

The academic campus itself has state arboretum certification, with hundreds of trees, thousands of plants, many in bloom and numerous spots to serve as background for photographs.

Of special interest on the campus are the Allergy-Free Demonstration Garden (north of the Smittcamp Alumni House); the Rose Garden (north of the Speech Arts Building); the Allen Lew Memorial Grove (east of the Thomas Administration Building); and the small Japanese Garden (just south of the fountain).

A view of the progress on the new Henry Madden Library (west of the Free Speech Area) is available from outside the construction fences.

Adjacent to the Library is the Peace Garden, a quiet place that honors peacemakers Mahatma Gandhi, Jane Addams, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and César Chávez.

The Maple Mall on the east side of the academic campus is home to a memorial to Navy submarines lost during the 20th century. There are 59 tulip trees and plaques honoring each of the submarines lost and the more than 3,700 men who died.

Souvenirs of Fresno State are available for purchase from the Kennel Bookstore, located just north of the fountain at the center of the academic campus.

Fresh seasonal produce, ice cream, meat, wine, olive oil, nuts, sauces and more – all produced by Fresno State students on the university’s 1,000-acre Agricultural Laboratory (the formal name for the campus farm) – are available at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market. The market at the southeast corner of Barstow and Chestnut avenues.

A campus map is available here.
