Osher program sets fall lecture schedule

Mas MasumotoAward-winning author and farmer Mas Masumoto of Del Rey and his daughter, Nikiko Masumoto, will kick off the fall 2008 Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) lecture series at California State University, Fresno.

Following the Masumotos’ presentation about family stories and exploring relationships between generations, the series will feature presentations by Fresno State faculty and community members on topics ranging from water research to Japanese art.

The Masumotos will speak at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Satellite Student Union on campus. The event is open to the general public for a $10 fee. OLLI participants are admitted as part of their membership.

Also in the fall linup:

  • Sept. 9 – Dr. David Zoldoske, director for the Center for Irrigation Technology at Fresno State will discuss “Water Research and Economics” and how they’re connected at the university.

  • Oct. 20 – Peter McDonald, dean of library services at Fresno State, will present Libraries, Liberty and the Case for Intellectual Freedom.”

  • Nov. 6 – Director and chief curator Andreas Marks of the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in Hanford will discuss “Scrolls, Screens, Ceramics: Masterpieces of Japanese Art in an Unexpected Place.”

  • Nov. 12 – Dr. Robert Levine, a psychology professor and author, will discuss the social psychology of time and how beliefs about time differ profoundly from culture to culture.

OLLI is housed within the Continuing and Global Education program, providing lectures, short courses and field trips for people 50 and older who want to exploring a broad spectrum of intellectual interests.

Spaces fill up fast, so those who want to participate are urged to act quickly. Enrollment in all fall general sessions is $55 for one person, $90 per couple. Associate memberships are $15 for admission to two sessions.

Included with all memberships are access to the Henry Madden Library, discount admission to local museums and the opportunity to participate in the field trips and short courses at additional cost.

In February, OLLI program director Dr. Shirley A. Bruegman will lead a 13-day educational journey to Egypt.
