The Fig Fest – the California Fig Advisory Board’s annual salute to its namesake fruit – moves to the California State University, Fresno campus on Saturday, Aug. 9, for its fifth anniversary celebration.

Fig Fest offers cooking demonstrations, gourmet food samples, fresh and dried figs for purchase, recipes and other events from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will be staged just west of the Satellite Student Union (near Maple and San Ramon avenues).

There will be samples of the new Fig Cookies and Cream ice cream developed in Fresno State’s student-operated Dairy Processing Lab. The ice cream can be purchased ($3.60 per pint) at the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market (at Chestnut and Barstow avenues) on campus, which is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Admission to the Fig Fest is $5. Proceeds will go to the Ag One Foundation, which benefits agricultural education at Fresno State, and to Slow Food Madera, which helps educate people about the value of food as a part of community and the need to know about the source of food.

The Gibson Farm Market also plans a special wine tasting from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Tastings of Fresno State’s award-winning wines usually occur 4-7 p.m.Thursday and Friday at the market.

The student-run market is open daily, selling fresh, seasonal student-produced fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat, wine, nuts and food products such as barbecue, pasta and fruit sauces.
