“Current Topics in the Care of the Female Athlete” will be the focus of the 2008 Sports Medicine Symposium on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Leon S. and Pete P. Peters Educational Center located in the Student Recreation Center at California State University, Fresno.

The symposium from 8 a.m. to noon is free and open to physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, other health care professionals, students and  the public. It is sponsored by the Central California Sports Medicine Institute at Fresno State.

Keynote speaker Christopher Powers of the University of Southern California will discuss mechanics of lower extremity injury in the female athlete and prevention of and intervention following lower extremity injury in female athletes. There also will be case presentations and updates on ACL injuries and nutritional needs of females.

The newly formed Central California Sports Medicine Institute’s goals include promotion of collaborative sports medicine research, education and service among the professional care providers of the region. For more information, call 559.278.2065.
