GIS Day, an event in 80 countries around the world to bring awareness about Geographic Information Systems (GIS), will be hosted Nov. 14, at California State University, Fresno by its Interdisciplinary Spatial Information Systems Center (ISIS) and the Henry Madden Library.

The purpose of event is to demonstrate how local professionals apply GIS to make a difference in society. A map exhibit showcasing work from Fresno State faculty and staff and local users will be on display at the Madden Library main entrance from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The maps’ developers will be available to discuss their work and answer questions about GIS technology.

On display will be maps from the following:

Dr. Zhi Wang, assistant professor of earth and environmental sciences – “Upper San Joaquin River: A Geostatistical Analysis of the Snowpack to Calculate Water Supply”

Dr. Balaji Sethuramasamyraja, assistant professor of industrial technology – “Cotton Yield Monitoring” and “Geospatial Modeling of Wine Grape Quality”

Dr. Stuart McFeeters, lecturer in geography – “Air Quality and Ozone”

Alan Kunze, technical support coordinating in Earth and Environmental Sciences – “Evolution of Pinacate Volcanism”

Janalee Ying, Quad Knopf – “General Plan Update: City of Dinuba”

The ISIS Center will offer live demonstrations of the university’s GIS facilities and a look at a recent aerial photo map of the Fresno State campus.

GIS Day is part of the National Geographic Society’s new Geography Action initiative, which includes Geography Awareness Week. The year-long effort embraces a variety of worldwide activities that support geography action by helping people learn about geographic information systems.
