Viticulturist Dan Rinke, a California State University, Fresno alumnus and the winemaker and vineyard manager at Johan Vineyards, was recognized by Allen Meadows’ Burghound.com with three wines listed among the top 45 Pinot Noirs from Oregon.

Burghound.com is a critically acclaimed wine review with thousands of subscribers in more than 50 countries and throughout the United States.

The Johan Vineyards wines are 2007 Pinot Noirs – the Nils Reserve, Estate and Three Barrel. Each scored in the 90th percentile – outstanding quality.

Rinke moved from his home state of Wisconsin to California in 2002 to become involved in the wine industry. He gained viticultural experience in California’s Central Coast wine region.

While at Fresno State, he worked part time as a research assistant in the Viticulture and Enology Research Center. Under the direction of Dr. Sanliang Gu, the Ricchiuti Chair of Viticulture Research and a Fresno State professor of viticulture, Rinke was involved in winegrape field research, laboratory analysis and experimental winery procedures.

Rinke graduated from Fresno State in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Viticulture and a minor in Plant Science.

He worked as an assistant winemaker at Domaine Alfred Vineyard in San Luis Obispo County’s Edna Valley, where he learned techniques of biodynamic farming. He joined Rhys Vineyards in Santa Cruz and sharpened his focus on producing high-quality Pinot Noir, joining Johan Vineyards in Amity, Ore., in 2007.
