California State University, Fresno art and design professor Doug Hansen is nominated for a Northern California Book Award in Children’s Literature for his “Mother Goose in California,” published in spring 2009 by Heyday Books.

Hansen illustrated and wrote the book, which features familiar nursery rhymes organized alphabetically and all linked to places and living things – flora and fauna – throughout the Golden State. “Mother Goose in California” is designed to be read to younger children, and then by them as they mature.

“I am so pleased and honored to be a nominee,” said Hansen. “In the book, I strive to create a personal vision of California and of childhood. Readers delight me by finding their own meaning and connections to the pictures and rhymes and by sharing the book with their children and grandchildren.”

Hansen joined the Fresno State faculty in 2002 after a lengthy career as an award-winning illustrator at The Fresno Bee.

The Northern California Book Awards will be announced April 18 in a ceremony at the San Francisco Main Library. Book reviewers and editors from Northern California determine the winners in fiction, nonfiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, translation and children’s literature.
