Fresno State prof's musical 'Con-Man' will be staged in Los Angeles

April 20, 2010 – 2:49 PM

“Con-Man: A Musical” by Dr. Benjamin Boone, an associate professor of music at California State University, Fresno, and his brother, University of Southern California professor Joseph Boone, will be performed by USC students Friday-Sunday, April 23-25, in Los Angeles.

The dark satire is based on Herman Melville’s “The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade” set on a Mississippi riverboat just before the Civil War.

Benjamin Boone, the composer, said he and his brother, the librettist, began collaborating on the production in 1998 in Paris. They received a residency in Spain and grants from Fresno State for workshops and readings as the creative process moved forward.

“Con-Man’s” first professional staged reading with music was produced in 2004 by the Riverside Opera Ensemble at the Tisch School of Drama at New York University.

The Los Angeles production will be staged at USC’s Village Gate Theatre, 3223 S. Hoover St. Tickets, which cost $15, are available at the door.

    Hi Ben,
Thanks for the notice and flyer. Wish I could see it but not this time.

We have a super opera man here, Caroll Freeman, who is so creative. You would love him. He is staging GIANNI SCHICCHI and THE VILLAGE SINGER for the Rossini Festival. Village Singer is by a relatively new composer who came here and set it on the students and gave a very good pep-talk to the student body. Don't remember is name but he has written over 240 works. It would be nice if you could show Carroll something of the 'Con Man' !!!!!!! Good luck on the present
    production.

Break a leg, Dr. B. I hope Con-Man will be staged here in Fresno before too long; I really want to see this!
