Plans for clothing, food, tutoring and pottery businesses proposed by Fresno high school students will vie in regional competition for a chance to attend national competition in New York for a $10,000 prize and an internship in the winner’s field.

The top five student business plans were selected from among nine judged on Saturday, May 8, in the fourth annual Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Central Valley Regional Business Plan Competition.

The Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at California State University, Fresno hosts the competition as part of its leadership in the NFTE program locally.

Moving to regional competition 6-9 p.m. May 20 at International Catering (4277 N. West Ave., Fresno) are:

  • Brenda Garcia of Bullard High School – Tres Petite Apparel, clothing for petite women.
  • Mai Vang of Duncan Polytechnical – Enjoy, a dessert business.
  • Brittany Gray of Edison High School – Handy Candy, a candy-selling business.
  • Ashlee Rocha of Fresno High School – Heart Me, plus-size clothing for children and teens.
  • Vernave Medrano of Roosevelt High School – Vernave’s Pottery, custom pottery.

Tickets for the regional competition are $50, which includes dinner. Reservations may be made through the Lyles Center website, www.lylescenter.com.
