California State University, Fresno President John D. Welty said he is hopeful in the wake of Gov. Schwarzenegger’s announcement of the May state budget revisions that left intact the governor’s previous proposal for the California State University system.

In a video message to faculty and staff, however, Welty said, that the cuts imposed as a result of reduced state support this fiscal year will result in reduced enrollment, employee layoffs and deferred maintenance and construction already in process at Fresno State.

Welty said the governor continues to make public higher education a top California budget priority. He urged the campus community to advocate for their legislators to join the governor in a commitment to California’s higher education system.

The hope, said Welty, is that the Legislature will deliver a budget that will allow Fresno State to increase enrollment and to rescind some of the cuts that have been made.
