A ruling today, May 19, in a case heard in Alameda County Superior Court allows the California State University to move forward with plans to offer self-support summer sessions.

California State University, Fresno is one of the campuses offering self-support classes, but it is one of very few campuses not charging additional fees to students, said Dr. Berta Gonzales, associate vice president of Continuing and Global Education.

“We felt access to courses was what our students needed,” said Gonzalez of the decision to offer the additional classes during summer.

Fresno State charges $286 per unit for summer classes, but caps the fee at $1,167 for those taking five or six units – a saving of $263 for students enrolled for five units and $549 for six-unit enrollments.

At issue in the lawsuit was the plantiff’s assertion that self-support summer classes “supplant” or replace classes that are offered in a state-support session.

“We appreciate the court’s recognition that allowing the CSU to offer self-support summer classes is the best way to serve students during these times of severe budget cuts,” said CSU General Counsel Christine Helwick.
