The Henry Madden Library at California State University, Fresno and the Fresno County Public Library through a Fresno Regional Foundation grant are presenting a film series, “Honoring the Japanese-American Experience in the San Joaquin Valley.”

The schedule is as follows:

Monday, Aug. 23, Woodward Park Regional Library, 944 E. Perrin Ave., Fresno, 6:30 p.m. Feature film: “Come See the Paradise” (1990). One family’s World War II-era odyssey through Los Angeles’ Little Tokyo, Seattle and the Manzanar relocation camp. With Dennis Quaid and Tamlyn Tornita.

Tuesday, Aug. 24, McCardle Room, Central Library, 2420 Mariposa St., Fresno, 6:30 p.m. Documentary double feature: “Conscience and the Constitution” (2000), about Japanese-American draft resisters in World War II relocation camps, and “Time of Fears” (2005), about the Arkansas relocation camps that housed many Fresno-area Japanese-Americans.

Wednesday, Aug. 25, Woodward Park Regional Library, 6:30 p.m. Feature film: “American Pastime” (2007), the tale of one family’s experiences at Utah’s Topaz relocation camp, and how bravery and baseball sustained them throughout World War II. Associate producer Kerry Nakagawa will be on hand to answer questions.

Thursday, Aug. 26, Fowler Branch Library, 306 S. 7th St., Fowler, 5 p.m. Documentary double feature: “Forced Out” (2003), about the social and economic losses caused by wartime relocation, and “Return to the Valley” (2003), about the postwar readjustment of Japanese-Americans returning to the Central Valley.

Saturday, Aug. 28, Fowler Branch Library, noon. Feature film: “Farewell to Manzanar” (1976), an early television interpretation of the Japanese-American relocation and its consequences; with Yuki Shimoda and Nobu McCarthy.

Monday, Aug. 30, Woodward Park Regional Library, 6:30 p.m. Documentary: “Toyo’s Camera” (2009), the story of an interned Japanese-American who secretly photographed activities in the relocation camps, using a smuggled lens and a homemade camera body.

Tuesday, Aug. 31, McCardle Room, Central Library, 6:30 p.m. Feature film: “Snow Falling on Cedars” (1999), explores postwar tensions between coastal residents in Washington and the local Japanese-American community; with Ethan Hawke, Youki Kudoh, Rick Yune and Max von Sydow.
