The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at California State University, Fresno ranks first among 38 programs nationally based on having the greatest number of enrolled students complete their first year within a university.

Fresno State CAMP shares its top ranking with California State University, Long Beach and Oregon State University.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the University Business Center, Room 192, CAMP will host the first of five Migrant Senior Days at Fresno State — conferences designed to help area high school seniors prepare for the college application process through CSU Mentor. (Full schedule below).

Funded through the U.S. Department of Education and Office of Migrant Education, CAMP serves students from migrant and seasonal farmworking families by assisting in their first year of college with academic, personal and financial support. The program was established nationally in 1972 and serves 2,400 students at colleges throughout the United States.

To date, nearly three-quarters of all CAMP students graduate with a bachelor’s degree, reports Ofelia Gamez, director of Fresno State’s CAMP. The program was established on campus in 1981 and currently serves 65 students annually.

“CAMP students complete their first year at a higher rate than non-CAMP students and are able to graduate despite their migrant and first generation needs,” Gamez said.

“Academics, student engagement and community service are strongly enforced throughout their first year of enrollment,” she added. “Fresno State provides many resources to assure student success.”

The program, which is housed in the Division of Student Affairs, receives institutional support from the Grant and Research Office and the Fresno State Foundation. CAMP partners with university staff, faculty, student services and the community to improve educational opportunities for its students.

Migrant Senior Days schedule:

  • Sept. 22 – 40 students from Lindsay
  • Sept. 23 – 120 Tulare County students
  • Sept. 28 – 150 Tulare County students
  • Oct. 6 – 100 Kern County students
  • Oct. 7 – 150 Fresno County students
