Chee Her, a California State University, Fresno majoring in Culinology®, is one of 36 finalists nationwide and one of only three from California who will compete in the third annual America’s Best Raisin Bread Contest.

Her participation at the bake-off Oct. 14-16 in Manhattan, Kan., was announced by the Fresno-based California Raisin Marketing Board, which represents nearly 3,000 growers of California raisins.

Preliminary judging took place in September where nine finalists from each professional category and three finalists from each student category were selected to participate in the bake-off at the American Institute of Baking.

Twelve winners will be selected based on their creation’s taste, appearance, originality and value. Besides industrywide recognition, winning bakers will receive a five-day vacation with visits to the Culinary Institute of America, Yosemite National Park and the San Joaquin Valley, where virtually all – 99.5 percent – American raisins are produced.

Chee Her’s entry “Pan de Pasas” was developed under the guidance of Dr. Klaus Tenbergen, coordinator of Fresno State’s Culinology program within the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, part of the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology.
