At a time when college athletics is suffering from the same economic malaise as the rest of the country, Fresno State football Coach Pat Hill is getting national attention for his decision to take a 30 percent reduction in guaranteed-salary on a new three-year contract.

The national newspaper USA Today, in partnership with the National Sports Law Institute at Marquette University Law School, researched the salaries of all but 10 of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches and found Hill’s huge pay cut unique.

USA today reports that since it began tracking coaches’ compensation, “It’s the first known instance of a school’s current coach accepting a new contract with that kind of reduction in annual guarantee.”
