Dr. Benjamin Boone, composer, saxophonist and specialist in performance of new music, is the recipient of the 2011 President’s Award of Excellence at California State University, Fresno.

Boone joined the Fresno State faculty in 2000 as an associate professor of music, teaching music composition and theory. He was honored Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Spring Assembly for faculty and staff.

The President’s Award of Excellence was established in 2001 by the University Advisory Board to honor Fresno State President John D. Welty. The award recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates integrity, leadership and a commitment to the university and the community as exemplified by President Welty.

University Advisory Board members, community leaders who consult with the president, select the winner and donate money for a $10,000 award that accompanies the honor.

Boone earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee, his master’s degree from Boston University and a doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina.

Since joining the faculty at Fresno State, Boone has received the university’s Provost Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research, the University Faculty Spirit of Service Award for his design of a service-learning partnership with a juvenile court facility in Fresno and the Best in Show Award from the Office of the Provost for his commitment to academic excellence.

In fall 2010 he was appointed Faculty Service-Learning Mentor for the Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning on Fresno State’s campus, where he has championed service-learning projects.

In addition to his work at Fresno State, Boone was also a Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellow to the Univeritatea de Stat Alecu Russo in the Republic of Moldova in 2005.

Boone’s compositions have been performed globally; he has also released a debut jazz album, “The Benjamin Boone Quartet: LIVE with Steve Mitchell.”
