Dr. Harjinder Pal Singh Walia, a Punjab University administrator, will deliver the keynote at the central San Joaquin Valley celebration of India’s 65th Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, Aug. 14, at California State University, Fresno.

The evening of cultural festivity, which is free and open to the public, begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Satellite Student Union (near Maple and San Ramon avenues, south of Barstow Avenue). Doors open at 4 p.m.

The celebration will feature the performance of popular Indian classical and folk dances like kathak, garba and bhangra. Indian sweets will be served.

Guests of honor include Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin.

Walia is director of the university’s Institute for Administrative Services and Allied Services Training Centre. He is the former head of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department at Punjabi University, near Patiala, and  is an editor for Sanchar, a national news and communication publication in India.

Walia also serves as general secretary for the All India Media Teacher’s Association and is chairman of the Global Punjab Foundation.

The celebration is co-sponsored by Fresno State’s Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute and Indian Students Club, the State Bank of India in Fresno and about 20 local Indian organizations and groups.
