Applications are being accepted for a new California State University Doctor of Nursing Practice program that will be offered jointly by California State University, Fresno and San José State University in fall 2012.

Fresno State will be the lead campus in the new program, which is designed for working professionals. It will be primarily offered in an online format with occasional intensive sessions held alternately on the Fresno State and San José campuses.

Informational sessions about the DNP will be at 6 p.m. on three days: Oct. 18 (McLane Hall, room 221) and Nov. 4 and Dec. 5 (McLane Hall, room 280).

All prospective students are required to be licensed registered nurses, have an acceptable master’s degree in nursing or a related health care field, and either certified or eligible to be certified in advanced nursing practice.

Admission will be annually in the fall under the cohort model, which calls for five semesters completed in 21 months of full-time study.

Pending final approval from the CSU Chancellor’s Office and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the DNP is designed to prepare nurse leaders and advanced practice nurses for evidence-based practice in patient care, leadership and educational roles. The culminating experience for this program is a doctoral project rather than a dissertation.

Completed applications must be submitted to the Department of Nursing at Fresno State by Dec. 31, 2011, for fall 2012 admission. Separate application for acceptance as a university student must be submitted by April 1, 2012.
