Philip Levine, U.S. poet laureate, will be joined by fellow Fresno State English professor emeritus Peter Everwine and music professor Benjamin Boone for “The Poetry of Jazz—The Jazz of Poetry” on Friday, March 16.

The event at the Tower Theatre (815 E. Olive Ave.) begins at 7 p.m.

Levine and Everwine will read from their works and the Benjamin Boone Quartet will perform at the fundraiser for Fresno Filmworks, which screens movies for the community, some in conjunction with Fresno State’s CineCulture series.

Levine, the poet laureate for 2011-12, has authored 20 collections of poetry. His honors include a Pulitzer Prize, two National Book Awards and two National Book Critic Circle Awards. He retired from Fresno State in 1992.

Everwine has published seven collections of poetry. He has been awarded a Pushcart Prize, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He retired from Fresno State in 1991.

Boone’s compositions appear on more than 20 CDs and have been performed around the globe by leading performers. He has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award, American Composers Forum Subito Award and Fresno State’s President’s Award of Excellence.
