State Sen. Michael J. Rubio, D-Shafter, is the first speaker in Fresno State Talks Politics, a new series of discussions on campus about issues of interest in the central San Joaquin Valley.

Rubio will discuss education, regional and statewide issues at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Free Speech Platform. The series, which plans another presentation before the Nov. 6 election is sponsored by Fresno State’s USU Production. Fresno State Democrats, a student organization is co-sponsoring the event.

The discussions “will help students discover the importance of the upcoming election by providing diverse perspectives from distinguished professionals competent in national and local political issues,” said Andrew Esguerra, the coordinator for USU Productions. “The event is intended to increase student interest and participation in the political process.”

Rubio’s 16th district covers all or portions of Fresno, Kern, Kings and Tulare counties. He has assignments on the Senate’s Agriculture, Health, Transportation and Housing, Veterans Affairs and Energy, Utilities and Communications committees and the Joint Legislative Audit Committee.

Rubio has been recognized as Legislator of the Year by the California Business Properties Association and California Narcotics Officers’ Association.

Assembly member Henry T. Perea, D-Fresno, will be the series’ second guest at 1 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Satellite Student Union. His 31st District includes the cities of Fresno, Fowler, Dinuba, Firebaugh, Kerman, Parlier, Mendota, Reedley, Cutler-Orosi, Sanger, Selma and San Joaquin.

Perea, a Fresno State alumnus, chairs the Assembly Insurance Committee, sits on the Agricultural Committee and co-founded the Latino Water Coalition.
