Fresno State junior German Marquez was named a 2013 Newman Civic Fellow in recognition for his community service and civic leadership. Marquez is one of 181 students from across the country to receive the fellowship.

While maintaining a 4.0 GPA as an Agricultural Business major and Philosophy minor, Marquez volunteered hundreds of hours of community service and worked to engage hundreds of his fellow students in service to others.

His volunteer work includes helping at the Bulldog Pantry, which feeds the poor who live near campus, and raising money for UNICEF. For the past two years Marquez helped organize a carnival for the patients at Children’s Hospital of Central California. After final exams last December, Marquez pulled together a group of volunteers to build a new playground for children living in a neighborhood near campus.

Newman Civic Fellow awards are granted by Campus Compact in memory of Dr. Frank Newman, who dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform.  Dr. Newman founded Campus Compact, a national coalition of nearly 1,200 college and university presidents.

Students are nominated for the Newman Civic Fellowship by their college and university presidents.

“These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can—and does—play in building stronger communities,” says Campus Compact President Maureen Curley.

Marquez was born in Jalisco, Mexico and raised in Tulelake, California.
