Moses Menchaca, a third-year senior political science major from Patterson, was elected Fresno State’s student body president for 2013-14 after three days of record voter participation.

Online voting for Associate Students Inc. (ASI) elections began Tuesday. This year 1,912 votes were cast, indicating 9.43% voter participation. The previous high was 1,783 ballots cast in 2010, reports Tara Powers-Meade, ASI coordinator.

Menchaca, 20, will succeed Arthur Montejano as ASI president June 1 when he and 17 other students elected will take their oath of office. The results will be certified in 21 days.

He garnered 845 votes in defeating Lucas Lundy, a junior recreation administration major from Fresno, and Jose Nava, a junior political science major from Merced.

Incumbent Rebecca Rosengarten, an accounting major, was re-elected to finance vice president with 1,505 votes. Political science major Sean Kiernan, also an incumbent, was re-elected vice president of external affairs with 882 votes. Both ran unopposed.

Seven at-large Senate seats and eight Senate positions representing specific schools or colleges were also filled.

The ASI executive vice president, the other top student officer, is chosen by senate members at their first meeting in June.

The Fresno chapter of the League of Women Voters, which has assisted at the polls in past years, tallied the results after polls closed at noon.
