It was a record-setting Kids Day for about 1,200 volunteers from Fresno State whose newspaper sales raised $37,404 – up almost $1,000 from the 2012 total.

On Kids Day – a joint effort between the Fresno Bee and KFSN Channel 30 – special editions of the Fresno Bee are sold for $1 apiece from street corners throughout the central San Joaquin Valley. Proceeds from the annual event benefit Children’s Hospital Central California. In the 26 years that Kids Day has been around, more than $5 million has been raised; this year’s goal was $480,000.

Fresno State student participation, organized by the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning, included representatives from 53 campus clubs, organizations, fraternities and sororities.

The top-selling group with 20+ volunteers was the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, with sales of $3,669.53. The Sigma Nu fraternity came in a close second with $3,658.83.

Among groups with less than 20 volunteers, the top selling organization was the Alpha Pi Sigma sorority, with sales of $1,745.48. The Punjab Sikh Awareness Society student club was next with sales of $1,136.01.

Kids Day has the largest student participation of any one-day service event at Fresno State. “The success of this event is due to the work of the volunteers and the support of many campus offices,” said Renee Delport, special events and projects coordinator for the Richter Center.
