The flags on the Fresno State campus will be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, April 11, in memory of a staff member and two retired faculty members.

Fresno State President John D. Welty issued the directive that the flags be lowered in honor of staff member Jim Crossbuck, retired faculty members Darlene Stewart and G. Vishu Viswewaran.

James “Jim” Cruz-Crossbuck, a well-known campus figure who drove the SCOUT cart for the disabled, died Feb. 23. A service was held March 9. A Fresno State alumnus, he served in the Army in Vietnam and was a deputy sheriff, private investigator and high school teacher before joining the Fresno State staff in 2007.

Professor Emerita of Physical Therapy Darlene Stewart, who passed away March 26, began her career at Fresno State in 1972 and chaired the department from the early 1980s until her retirement in 1998. Upon retirement, she established the Darlene Stewart Professional Promise Award for graduate physical therapy students. She recently moved to Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore., with her husband, Keith. No formal service is planned.

Professor Emeritus of Social Work Education, G. “Vishu” Viswewaran, died March 30 in Pinole. A memorial service will be held in Fresno later this month. Dr. Viswewaran served on the Fresno State faculty from 1969 to 2000.
