Original artwork by local author and illustrator Doug Hansen, a Graphic Design professor at Fresno State, is on display in the Henry Madden Library through Aug. 30.

Presented by the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Fresno State, the exhibition features illustrations from Hansen’s two picture books, “Mother Goose in California” and “Aesop in California” – both published by Heyday, in 2009 and 2013, respectively.

Painted in watercolors and gouache and outlined in ink, Hansen’s richly colored illustrations bring to life the state’s flora and fauna. Kirkus Reviews called Aesop an “affectionate, glowing collection…hard to resist.”

The exhibition also showcases the processes Hansen used in creating his works. Preliminary sketches, hand-drawn maps, and photographs from his research road trips throughout California are on display.

A native of Fresno, Hansen worked as a newsroom artist at The Fresno Bee for 23 years. He joined Fresno State’s Art and Design faculty in 2002 and teaches illustration in both traditional and digital media. He is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the Society of Illustrators.

The exhibition, which opened June 3 in the Leon S. Peters Ellipse Gallery on the second floor of the library’s North Wing, is open during the library‘s summer hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

From Aug.22-30, the library will be open 7:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 2 to 10 p.m. Sunday.
