The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s (CDFA) advisory board will meet at Fresno State, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, to address hunger in the San Joaquin Valley.

The free, public meeting in the Satellite Student Union (2485 E. San Ramon) will focus on a 2012 UCLA  report that identified the San Joaquin Valley as having one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the state.

The meeting will provide an overview of successful farm-to-food bank programs occurring in other areas of the state. A forum for local stakeholders will discuss potential initiatives and CDFA Secretary Karen Ross is invited to attend.

Dr. Charles Boyer, dean of Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology and member of the advisory board, will welcome the 15-person panel that advises the Gov. Jerry Brown and Secretary Ross regarding agricultural issues and consumer needs.

The state board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials, agricultural representative and citizens to discuss current issues of concern to California agriculture.
