Fresno State Band Camp is under way on campus through Aug. 20 as the Bulldog Marching Band gears up for its first two big performances: at the University Courtyard move-in day on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 5:30 p.m. and the football home opener on Aug. 29.
Dr. Gary P. Gilroy has resumed directorship of the band until a replacement can be found for Dr. David Fullmer, who took a new position in Idaho. Camp sessions run daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m. Among new instruments are 20 King Silver Sousaphones. About 30 members make up the smaller pep band, Bulldog Beat, which will play at the residence halls welcome barbecue on move-in day. On the last day of band camp there will be a short morning rehearsal following a visit from the fire department to give the hard-working musicians a cool spray down.
