Cary Edmondson

University photographer Cary Edmondson’s work is featured on the cover of the latest issue of Sports Illustrated. His photo of Stanford football player Shayne Skov was chosen as one of six regional covers for the magazine’s special 2013 College Football Preview, which also features Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr as a Heisman Trophy dark horse.

Edmondson, a 2003 graduate of Fresno State and former photo editor of The Collegian student newspaper, now works for Fresno State’s University Communications department and spends many weekends photographing other college and professional sporting events around the state. He captured the cover image of Skov last season at an Oct. 6 game between Stanford and Arizona.

“Getting the cover of Sports Illustrated is the biggest accomplishment of my career to this point,” Edmondson said. “It’s something I’ve worked for since I first started taking photos as a student at Fresno State.”

Edmondson was also recently featured in a video on his concept for a creative photo shoot with Fresno State football players Carr, Davante Adams and Derron Smith — unveiling the team’s new all-white and all-black alternate uniforms. Edmondson’s assistants splashed buckets of water on the student-athletes to simulate waves as they posed in the new uniforms.

“The idea behind the water shoot was to take a piece of Fresno State tradition, the Red Wave fan base, and mold it with the excitement and buzz of a new college football season,” Edmondson said.
