Vampire novels? Navy SEAL adventures? Celebrity biographies?
While these are not the type of books typically associated with an academic library, the Henry Madden Library at Fresno State now features a broad selection of “pop lit” as part of its new Popular Reading Collection.
A celebration for the new collection will be held 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, in the first-floor main lobby of the Madden Library.
The Popular Reading Collection was launched in June and is open to the public for check-out. Patrons can check out bestsellers, award winners, multi-cultural titles, books with local interest, tie-ins to movies and popular culture. In this mini-public library, dust jackets have been retained to facilitate browsing.
At 3 p.m. a group of local authors will talk about their work while presenting copies of their latest titles to the library for this special collection.
Best-selling novelist Bonnie Hearn Hill will donate her latest thriller, “If It Bleeds.” Hazel Dixon Cooper will present her newest book of astrological advice, “Work on a Rotten Day: Astrological Advice for Outwitting Conniving Coworkers, Slacker Staff, and the Boss from Hell.” Christopher Allan Poe, who graduated from Fresno State, will share his paranormal adventure novel, “The Portal.”
In honor of the “pop” theme, popcorn, soda pop, and other refreshments will be served.
