Fresno State’s Henry Madden Library and Ethics Center, and the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno, are hosting a presentation by noted author and attorney John Tehranian, 5 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18 at the Peters Business Building Auditorium, room 191.

This free event is part of the Madden Library’s “Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys” project. The lecture is open to the public but seating is limited and reservations are recommended.

Tehranian’s “Playing Cowboys and Iranians” presentation will focus on the public discourse on race colorblindness, the use of Middle-Eastern/Islamic themes to question Barack Obama’s authenticity and the current debate on affirmative action and immigration policy. Tehranian addressed many of these issues in his 2009 book, “Whitewashed: America’s Invisible Middle Eastern Minority.”

Tehranian is the Irwin R. Buchalter Professor of Law at Los Angeles’ Southwestern Law School and his professional interests include intellectual property and entertainment law. Tehranian has written dozens of articles and two books on topics such as civil rights, intellectual property, race and the intersection of law and culture.

He is a frequent commentator for broadcast and print media and has been quoted in the “New York Times,” “Harper’s Magazine,” “Los Angeles Times,” “Financial Times,” “Hollywood Reporter” and the “Christian Science Monitor.”

Muslim Journeys is a special project funded by the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities. It was created to help Americans become more familiar with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims worldwide.
