The public is invited to hear award-winning author and illustrator Elisa Kleven speak during the Arne Nixon Center Advocates’ annual meeting, 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1 in the Henry Madden Library, room 2206.
Kleven is the author and/or illustrator of more than 30 children’s picture books, including “Welcome Home, Mouse,” “The Paper Princess” series, “The Lion and the Little Red Bird, Hooray, A Piñata!” and “Wish: Wishing Traditions Around the World.” She also illustrated several books including “De Colores” by Jose-Luis Orozco, “Abuela” and “Isla” by Arthur Dorros and “The Weaver” by Thacher Hurd.
Kleven’s newest book, “Glasswing: A Butterfly’s Story,” is about Claire, a butterfly who finds herself lost in a large city and separated from her family. Claire’s resourcefulness and caring new friends help to create an urban oasis and reunite her at last with her family. Publisher’s Weekly wrote, “The radiance of each spread seems purely intended to provoke joy, kindheartedness and optimism.”
Arne Nixon Center Advocates is the support group for the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature, a department of the Henry Madden Library. Its mission to promote awareness of the center and generate excitement in sharing literature for young people is accomplished through creative fundraising and sponsorship of related programs, conferences and exhibitions.
The talk is free and open to the public. The evening starts with a catered reception at 6 p.m. A brief administrative meeting will be held at 7 p.m. during the first few minutes of the program. Kleven’s books will be available for sale and autographing after the presentation. Unrestricted parking is available in lots D and E, located closest to the library.
