UPDATE (Oct. 18, 2013): Homecoming contest winners announced, rally tonight

Club Austral, a student organization founded by Spanish majors in 2008, won the Fresno State Homecoming Club and Organization Banner Decorating Contest sponsored by Student Involvement. The club won a first-place gift basket which includes eight tickets to the Paramore concert at the Save Mart Center Oct. 22, four student tickets to the Fresno State vs. UNLV homecoming game Oct. 19 and some Fresno State gear. University Courtyard won the annual University Office Homecoming Decorating Contest sponsored by the Staff Assembly Executive Committee and was presented the perpetual Bulldog Statue to display for the year. Fresno State celebrates Homecoming Week Oct. 14-19, highlighted by the homecoming pep rally 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in the Red Lot at Bulldog Stadium (southwest corner of Barstow and Cedar avenues). The Bulldogs football team and coach Tim DeRuyter quarterback Derek Carr and other players will be introduced.

The weeklong celebration, with the theme “Throwback,” culminates with the homecoming game at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19,when the undefeated Bulldogs (5-0, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) host UNLV (3-2, 1-0).

The pep rally features a performance from Tone Loc, known for “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina.” The pep band will also perform with the Bulldogs spirit squad. The first 50 attendees will be entered in a raffle to win two tickets to the Zack Brown Band coming to Fresno

In addition to the coach and Carr, former football players will attend. Master and Mistress of Ceremonies will be Moses Menchaca and Candice Amico, ASI student body president and executive vice president.

Free public parking will be available for the rally in Lot Q (Barstow Avenue east of Cedar Avenue).

The week’s activities kick off at noon Monday with a student club spirit banner contest in the Free Speech Area and the T-shirt Exchange, a program where students can exchange their high school or other college shirts for a Fresno State shirt. Students can go to the ASI programs office (USU room 316) starting Monday. All accepted shirts will be donated to a local charity.

There will be a banner decorating contest for student clubs    and a campus office decorating contest. The Save Mart Center donated tickets for upcoming concerts Paramore (Oct. 22) and Zac Brown Band (Nov. 15) as prizes for the student contest and pep rally.

Homecoming traditionally is the time for alumni to return home to their alma mater. Events include:

  •  The sold-out Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in the Save Mart Center where Darius Assemi, president of Granville Homes, will be honored with the Fresno State Alumni Association’s Top Dog Distinguished Alumnus Award along with 14 other outstanding alumni (see press release link below).
  •  On game day, the Alumni Association will pass out “Throwback” buttons at tailgates in the Red, White and Blue lots (the three lots immediately surrounding the stadium) and at the student tailgate by University Residence Halls on campus. The buttons feature Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr and the Alumni Association’s new student/alumni engagement campaign title “Bulldog for Life.”
  • And per Bulldogs tradition, the Fresno State Alumni Band will team up with the Bulldogs Marching Band to perform during the game. Alumnus Steve Sprague (1994) returns to serve as the director of this year’s Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band, said Dr. Gary P. Gilroy, Fresno State director of bands. Sprague has served as director of bands at La Joya Middle School in Visalia for 16 years.

The Alumni Association is launching a campaign to encourage current students to plan to join the organization with “Hump day Hangout,” at the Smittcamp Alumni House 4-7 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Oct.16.  A YouTube video was created for the campaign: http://youtu.be/D5MTZU-stj4.

Keeping with this year’s “Throwback” theme, the Fresno State’s Staff Assembly Executive Committee presents its annual University Office Homecoming Decorating Contest for employees.

Judging for the office decorating contest will start at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 and the winner will be announced at the monthly Red Friday event on Oct. 18 in the USU Pavilion. Decorations will be judged on creativity using the Homecoming theme, said contest coordinator Grace Liu. Winners receive the perpetual Bulldog Statue to display in their office for the year.

For the student club and organizations banner decorating contest, presented by the Student Involvement office, contestants will display their entrees on the windows of the University Student Union beginning Monday, Oct. 14. Judges will select the top three winners that will be announced at the volleyball game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 in the Save Mart Center.

Also as part of Homecoming Week, the grand opening of the new Paws-N-Go Market in the North Gym will be at 11 a.m. on Monday.  It is a quick convenience type market on the west side of the campus will provide sundry type items, basic school supplies and a variety of grab and go beverages and pre-packaged food and snack items fresh from the university’s Gibson Farm Market.  

Homecoming Week activities are presented by Associated Students, Inc. (ASI), Student Involvement, the Fresno State Alumni Association, University Student Union Productions and the Staff Assembly.

Monday, Oct. 14

Noon   “Nooner” concert presented by University Student Union Productions in the USU South Patio Pit  featuring 40 Watt Hype.

11 a.m.-2 p.m.The second annual Bring it Home Weekend BBQ cook off by Fresno State football alumni at O’Neill Park. Tasting passes will be available for $20 per person.

5 p.m.  Homecoming student tailgate for Fresno State students with valid identification in the “Bulldog Pride Zone” on the lawn and volleyball area in the University Residence Halls (Shaw and Cedar avenues).
