The Fresno State African-American Student Recruitment Conference, “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child,” will be held 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Satellite Student Union (2485 E. San Ramon Ave. at Maple Avenue).

Sponsored by University Outreach Services, the conference is free and open to the public.

Dr. T. Hassan Johnson, assistant professor of Africana Studies, will deliver the keynote remarks to nearly 500 high school students, parents and teachers.

According to the event’s coordinator, Outreach counselor Kornya Lansana, the conference will prepare students for both academic and educational success. Students also will have an opportunity to explore different academic resources and a variety of workshops related to student success.

“The focus of this year’s conference is helping students to recognize their inner strength, challenge themselves academically and prepare for college,” Lansana said.

African-American students make up approximately five percent of Fresno State’s 23.060   student enrollment.
