The Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band will lead the Fresno Veterans Day Parade in downtown Fresno at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, while other student groups also observe the occasion over the weekend.

The campus will be closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day, the 94th anniversary recognizing armistice declared between Germany and the Allied Nations ending World War I.

“We at Fresno State are appreciative of the service and sacrifice of all veterans and applaud those who are now students seeking a university education,” said President Joseph I. Castro. “I urge everyone to remember our veterans on Nov. 11 and every day and I encourage veterans to take advantage of the services available to them at Fresno State.”

Fresno State’s veterans/military student population is approximately 380 who are served through the Veterans Services Office in the Division of Student Affairs. The CSU Troops to College program is designed to attract more veterans to California’s public universities and colleges by making campuses more veteran-friendly.

Two student clubs, the Fresno chapter of the national Student Veterans Organization, and the Omega Delta Sigma, a student veterans fraternity, help with that objective and are involved in Veterans Day events this week.

The Student Veterans Organization sponsored an on-campus observance Nov. 6 to announce relocation of the Memorial Sign and an online fundraiser.

Omega Delta Sigma will host the King Cornhole Challenge Tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Swiggs Restaurant (1440 E. Shaw Ave. at Sixth Street). Proceeds benefit the Central Valley Honor Flight.

Also Saturday, Fresno State’s Air Force ROTC hosts its annual Veterans 5K run at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, beginning at the North Gym on campus. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. All proceeds raised at the event benefit the VA Hospital in Fresno.

The two student veterans clubs also will participate in the Veterans Day Parade in downtown Fresno along with Fresno State mascot TimeOut and the Spirit Squad.

The parade begins at Tulare and P streets with an opening ceremony in front of Fresno City Hall (2600 Fresno St.). Billed as one of the largest in the nation, the parade is broadcast live by KSEE 24 (NBC affiliate) via satellite on the Pentagon Channel. It ends at Chukchansi Park on Tulare Avenue and Broadway Street.
