A candlelight vigil celebrating Nelson “Madiba” Mandela will be held at Fresno State’s Free Speech Area platform from 5:30-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9. Event organizer Francine Oputa said the free, public event will celebrate the life of “a devoted champion for peace and social justice” who died Dec. 5 at the age of 95. “We will honor his selfless work advocating for human rights and being the face of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa,” said Oputa, director of the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute at Fresno State.
