The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature and the San Joaquin Valley Writing Project present “Breaking Barriers,” the third symposia for teachers and credential students, 9 a.m. Feb. 8 in the Kremen Education Building, room 140.
This symposium will address how teachers can use Common Core aligned literacy practices to help students address situations where their options seem limited.
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is intended to help ensure America’s students are college- and career-ready by the end of high school. The standards were adopted by the California State Board of Education in August 2010 and modified in March 2013.
Morning speakers include Fresno’s first Poet Laureate James Tyner and Fresno State professor and author Alex Espinoza. Afternoon curriculum workshops will be conducted by Fresno State professor and specialist in English Education and comics Alison Mandaville and elementary teacher and GATE program coordinator Marcie Haas.
Early registration is $25 until Jan. 25 and includes a copy of Sherman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” a plenary session, lunch and participation in Common Core aligned workshops focusing on writing instruction.
Registration is also open for the last session of the symposia series, “Investigating Our World.” This session, which combines writing curriculum with the natural sciences, will be held completely online throughout the month of March using the Blackboard Learning Management System.
