Fresno State will celebrate Valentine’s Day by hosting a “Healthy Love” Fair at noon, Feb. 14, in the Free Speech Area.

The event is part of Fresno State’s observance of the international One Billion Rising movement to raise awareness about violence and abuse towards women.

The fair will feature several campus and community organizations that provide resources for healthy relationships.

An estimated one billion women will be subjected to some form of abuse in their lifetime according to Vanessa Jones, a Mass Communication and Journalism major, minoring in Women’s Studies.

“With the world population at approximately seven billion, about three billion are women, making one in three women victims of abuse,” Jones said.

At the Valentine’s Day event on campus, two conga lines will proceed through campus rounding up participants to meet up at the Free Speech Area for a flash mob. Participants also will perform dances such as “La Macarena” and “Cupid Shuffle.”

Volunteers will recite poetry and share personal stories of abuse.

The free, public event is sponsored by Fresno State’s Women’s Studies Program.
