Bishop Ochoa

The Most Reverend Armando X. Ochoa, D.D., bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno, will celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass at noon, March 5 in the Satellite Student Union at Fresno State.

Sponsored by the Newman Catholic Student Association of Fresno State and the St. Paul Newman Center, the service is for students and employees but is open to the public.

The Mass will be the first official visit to the campus by the leader of the diocese since Bishop Ochoa was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to succeed the late Bishop John Steinbock in December 2011. He was installed as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Fresno on Feb. 1, 2012.

According to Karey Spach, director of Campus Ministry at St. Paul Newman Center, Bishop Ochoa will be assisted by Deacon Bill Lucido.

Spach said CSA President Tim Compton will lead a team of Fresno State students participating as musicians, readers and ministers of the Eucharist. German Marquez and Ellen Douglass will serve as lectors. Elizabeth Brown of the CSA Leadership Team will deliver a welcome.

Assisting Bishop Ochoa and Deacon Lucido with distribution of ashes will be students Annie ash-servicesWilcox and Elvira Arias, who are also members of the CSA Leadership Team; Blanca Hernandez, vice president of the student club EsTuDios; and Bailee Hustedde, a Fresno State alumna.
