Dr. Gonalez and Assemblyman Henry T. Perea

Assemblyman Henry T. Perea (D-Fresno) named Dr. Luz Gonzalez, dean of Fresno State’s College of Social Sciences, the 31st Assembly District’s 2014 Woman of the Year as part of the California State Capitol tradition to highlight the achievements of outstanding women throughout California during Women’s History Month.

An honoree from each district was introduced on the Assembly Floor March 10 and presented with a resolution recognizing her respective accomplishments. The annual event has been a Capitol tradition since 1987.

Gonzalez was selected for “her unwavering dedication to the community and to the young people of the Central Valley” in keeping with the state’s theme this year, “celebrating women of character, courage and commitment.”

“Dr. Luz Gonzalez is the epitome of this year’s Women’s History Month theme,” Perea said. “From farmworker to professor, she empowered herself to make great achievements and tremendous contributions to our community.  Her passion for education is unprecedented and her wisdom leaves long-lasting marks on students.”

He cited several programs, projects and events of distinction that Gonzalez has helped develop at Fresno State, notably her work with the Cesar Chavez Monument in the Peace Garden on campus and the annual Latino Commencement Celebration that began in 1975 under the Fresno State Chicano Alumni Association and has been coordinated through the College of Social Sciences for the past 19 years.
