United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta will be the keynote speaker at the Fifth Annual Local Latina Leadership Conference from 1-4 p.m. today at Fresno State.
The Local Latina Leadership Conference is presented by the Women’s Resource Center as part of Fresno State’s Women’s Herstory Month. This free, public event will be in the Kremen Education Building, Room 140.
The conference serves to demonstrate that students can achieve success despite obstacles and challenges they may face, said Jessica Adams of the center.
“Fresno State’s Women’s Herstory month uses the month of March to empower, inspire and recognize women from all walks of life,” Adams said.
Attendees can also visit a Women’s Herstory Month exhibit on the north wing of the second floor of Fresno State’s Henry Madden Library.
Among Huerta’s many accomplishments, including founding United Farm Workers with the late Cesar Chavez is her work with the Dolores Huerta Foundation. She is also a former University of California regent and holds more than 11 honorary doctorates from various universities.
She spoke at the university’s celebration of Chavez in 2011 and spoke to a Sociology class on campus this morning about Covered California, the state’s marketplace for the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. She was joined by Peter V. Lee, executive director of Covered California.
