The “Protect Your Dogs Campaign” that began last fall to prevent alcohol overdose incidents among students and raise awareness will unveil its new look during two recruitment events this week seeking future volunteers.

The recruitment events will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 and Friday, March 21 at the Free Speech Area platform.

Students can sign up for one-year volunteer positions in several Health Promotion and Wellness Services (PAWS) programs  in Fresno State’s University Health and Psychological Services (Student Health Center). About 30 students volunteer annually for the various wellness programs.

The PAWS programs are designed to assist students in achieving and maintaining healthy lifestyles, said Kathy Yarmo, coordinator of PAWS and chair of Fresno State’s Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Safety Council.

The purpose of the Protect Your Dogs Campaign is to prevent future alcohol overdose incidents among students by educating them about the signs of overdose and how to handle an emergency involving alcohol, Yarmo said.

Promotional items include magnets and posters that will be distributed to the residence halls on campus and to large, off-campus housing complexes.

“These materials contain information to help keep our students knowledgeable and informed on how to handle an alcohol emergency,” Yarmo said.

The second phase of the Protect Your Dogs campaign, WATCHDOG, rolled out last semester and holds six training workshops a year to help students learn how to  respond to an alcohol emergency situations.
