Dr. Sundaran Annamalai, executive director of The World Bank Group, will give a lecture on “Investments of the World Bank in Agriculture and Rural Development in Southeast Asia” at 5 p.m. Monday, April 28 in the Peters Auditorium.

Annamalai, of Malaysia, represents 11 member countries of The World Bank including Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga and Vietnam.

The World Bank’s mission is to end extreme poverty through decreasing the percentage of individuals who live on less than $1.25 a day to less than 3 percent and promote prosperity by fostering income growth of the bottom 40 percent of every country, according to The World Bank website.

This lecture is part of a graduate seminar class based on international agriculture, said Dr. Anil Shrestha, a Fresno State Plant Science professor and the host of the event. Attendees will hear about the World Bank’s involvement in Southeast Asia along with Annamalai’s personal perspective.

“Our students will have an opportunity to learn about agriculture and rural development in a global context,” Shrestha said.

The lecture is sponsored by Fresno State’s Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology. To RSVP for the free, public event contact Dr. Bill Erysian at bille@csufresno.edu or 559.278.5115.
