A scale model of the 1964 New York World’s Fair (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year) will be on display at an open house of the Special Collections Research Center in the Henry Madden Library from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 3.

Eight of these models were created to promote the fair around the country. The model on display is one of only three known to still exist; the other two are in Queens, New York.

The theme of the 1964 New York World’s Fair was “Peace Through Understanding” and it was dedicated to “Man’s Achievement on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe.” This was symbolized by a 12-story tall, stainless-steel model of the earth called the “Unisphere.”

The fair ran for two six-month seasons, April 22-October 18, 1964 and April 21-October 17, 1965. It was the third major world’s fair to be held in New York City.

The open house is a showcase of the latest acquisitions to the Donald G. Larson Collection on International Expositions and Fairs. The original donor, Don Larson, will be on hand to greet the public and answer questions.

This event is free and open to the public. Parking on campus is free that day.
