The 120-mile trek to repeat as champions of the Gilroy Garlic Festival Garlic Bowl July 25 begins about 9 a.m. Friday, July 25 when Fresno State Executive Chef Erik Debaude and his sous chef, alumnus Bryan Kramer, depart campus for Gilroy. A contingent of about 40 Red Wave culinary aficionados are expected to join them as they take on chefs from University of California, Berkeley and the Santa Clara University at 1:45 p.m. Friday. The chefs conducted three rehearsals of their new recipes for the second annual collegiate competition held as part of the 36th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival that is expected to draw more than 100,000 visitors to Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy July 25-27. San Jose State University, which lost to Fresno State last year, dropped from the competition.
