More than 1,100 Fresno State students will move into University Courtyard residence halls from 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 to 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17.

Some students have already checked in, but the majority will move in this weekend. They will be greeted by the university’s Baggage Buddies — members of student clubs who volunteer to provide a warm welcome and help incoming students unload suitcases, bed linens, TVs and other college-living essentials.

They will be the first of a projected enrollment of 23,050 students to arrive on campus for the 2014-15 academic year. Classes start Thursday, Aug. 21.

Fresno State offers traditional community-style halls (Baker, Graves and Homan) and suite-style accommodations (Aspen, Sycamore, Ponderosa, Sequoia, Birch and Cedar halls).

The Fresno State Alumni Association will provide resident students with “swag bags” again this year. The bags will be placed in every University Courtyard room as part of the “Bulldog For Life” student engagement campaign. The gifts consist of a Fresno State drawstring bag, sunglasses and buffs (“survivor” headbands).

On Saturday, Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro will greet new residents from 9:30-11 a.m. and Dr. Frank Lamas, vice president for Student Affairs, will greet them from 10-11:30 a.m. before joining students and parents during the welcome barbecue from 4:30-7 p.m.. The Bulldog Marching Band will be on hand to perform about 5:30 p.m.
