Fresno State students now have the opportunity to address global issues as part of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). President Bill Clinton established CGI in 2005 to organize leaders in implementing creative solutions to the world’s challenges.
In 2007, CGI University was established, challenging college students to develop practical, innovative solutions. Students participating in CGI University will develop their own Commitment to Action — a set of specific, measureable initiatives to solve challenges on a local or worldwide scale.
The Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship is managing Fresno State’s involvement in the program and seeking Fresno State students who are interested in participating.
“The Clinton Global Initiative is very much in alignment with Fresno State’s core vision,” said University President Joseph I. Castro. “Working together, I believe we can make the kind of impact that improves the quality of life around the campus, the Central Valley and across the globe.”
Students can download the application at www.clintonfoundation.org, create a Commitment to Action and then schedule a consultation with Nelson Sebra, the entrepreneur-in-residence at the Lyles Center. Funding may be available to help Fresno State students kick start their projects.
Past student projects include the establishment of a campus bike-share program and development of an e-learning application for mobile phones. As part of CGI University, students have made more than 4,800 commitments to action and nearly $2 million in funding has been awarded to their efforts.
CGI University will host a meeting in March 2015 at the University of Miami where students, university representatives, topic experts and celebrities will develop solutions. Chosen applications will receive financing to attend the meeting.
