The fall 2014 issue of FresnoState Magazine hits mailboxes and inboxes this week, giving readers an in-depth look at the “Changing Face of Campus” as major construction projects are underway to enhance campus life and research.

The cover story details the Jordan Research Center, a 30,000-square-foot agricultural research building that will be unlike any other in the California State University system. Several hundred yards southeast of that, construction is wrapping up on a retail phase of Campus Pointe, the largest mixed-use, public-private partnership ever in the CSU system. And on the west end of campus, the new Physical Therapy and Intercollegiate Athletics Building is under construction.

“If we’re not moving forward, we’re falling behind. And falling behind is not an option,” said Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro. “Fresno State is boldly approaching the future with a laser-focus on student success and providing innovative, nationally recognized academic and athletic programs.”

The magazine also offers a look at the private support that made the Jordan Research Center possible, as well as the investment entrepreneur Claude Laval III made in a new student scholarship fund.

The sports section is highlighted by a feature on the women’s basketball program that has earned seven straight conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances, and a profile on Bulldogs linebacker Karl Mickelsen, who devotes as much time to charity work off the field as he does to playing football.

“As a student-athlete, it’s all about time management,” Mickelsen said. “You’ve got time to play football, time to be a student and you’ve got time to be helping out in the community.”

The issue features a diverse group of students, alumni, faculty and friends who are making a difference at the University and beyond. Readers can learn about the three doctoral programs offered at Fresno State as well as the impressive list of high-ranking judges who credit the University with giving them a start — including Marvin R. Baxter, associate justice on the California Supreme Court.

“I owe my entire career to having attended Fresno State,” Baxter said. “Fresno State provided me with opportunities I would not have had at another university.”

FresnoState Magazine is a biannual publication of the Office of University Communications at Fresno State. The award-winning magazine is published online and distributed by mail and email to a select list of Fresno State alumni, supporters and friends.
