Karen Adell Scot, a transgender woman and activist who teaches at Yosemite High School in Oakhurst, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9in the North Gym, Room 118, at Fresno State.
Free and open to the public, the talk is part of the “Sociology of Sex and Gender” class taught by Dr. Linda Vang, a part-time instructor in the Department of Sociology at Fresno State.
Scot, 56, will speak about the challenges of living and working as a transgender person in America.
She will share her experiences living as male Gary Sconce for most of her life and her decision to undergo gender reassignment surgery and change her name. Earlier this year, Scot’s story made major media headlines nationally.
Vang said Scot’s talk will help students and the general public to gain a better understanding.
“There is a lot of misinformation out there, and I will be happy to help with changing that in a few hearts,” Scot said.
Scot has received numerous awards for teaching excellence, has coached three state championship teams in science competitions, has written and produced theatrically distributed feature films, is serving as a major in the California Cadet Corps and has served as deputy sheriff.
She has taught advanced placement courses in physics, chemistry and biology as well as general courses in zoology, human anatomy, physiology, human biology, earth science, physical science, computer technology, the Internet and digital filmmaking.
Now divorced, Scot has two children and three grandchildren. She revealed her transition to her family in April 2013.
Scot is establishing a national organization, TransCare, to support transgender people with the stress of transitioning.
